Queen Comes to Aylsham (3rd May 2019)
On Friday night Cawston Band with the Aylsham Rotary held a concert in the Jubilee Family Centre at Aylsham. The first part was a more traditional brass band programme of music. During the interval, the audience were able to fortify themselves with refreshments for the second part in which the Band gave their tribute to the rock band, Queen. This was the first time the Cawston Band had played this tribute. A full house sang along with the words, waved their arms enthusiastically and clapped to an original interpretation of Queen's favourite songs. Performances included band-members Tom Ellis and Philip Green dressing up as Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballé for an interpretation of their hit ‘Barcelona’ with baritone and cornet. This was followed by a solo routine imitating Freddie Mercury that defies description! The evening would have finished with the unforgettable ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’ – had not the audience demanded an encore after this.
The event was sponsored by a number of local businesses and all the amounts raised was split equally between Cawston Band to fund their activities and Rotary in Aylsham for the local, national and international charities it supports. Judging by the buzz as they left, the audience clearly enjoyed their evening - particularly the nostalgia of the Queen hits. And the Cawston Band clearly “… are the champions”!
Notes from the band room (St Faith's Journal Spring 2019)
It seems like only yesterday it was Christmas and yet the band is now well into contest season - this year we'll be competing at Stevenage on 16 March, with possibly another contest in Oxford in February as well.
We were delighted with our annual St Faiths Christmas concert and a huge thank you to everyone who came along and made it such a success. We raised over £830 which is a fantastic amount.
We have lots of concerts lined up for 2019 already - have a look at www.cawstonband.co.uk for the latest list - and are already looking forward to our summer "Best of British" concert at St Faiths on Saturday 20 July. Like last year we will be aiming for an indoor street party feel, so you're invited to bring along some nibbles, meet up with friends at the tables and join in the singing and flag waving. The doors will be open from 7pm and we aim to start at 7.30pm.
Happy new(ish!) year from everyone in Cawston Band - look forward to seeing you soon!
